Earlier this year, Display Mate crowned Samsung’s Galaxy S6 for having the best display in a smartphone. Less than six months later, Samsung has managed to push the technology barrier further with the 5.7-inch display on the Galaxy Note 5, which has now taken the crown of having the best display in a smartphone from its smaller sibling.
In its testing, Display Mate found that the Galaxy Note 5 has the “most accurate display” under the ‘Basic’ screen mode they have ever come across in a smartphone or tablet. It further notes that due to the low reflectance and high brightness, the Galaxy Note 5’s display scored the highest points in their contrast rating for high ambient light benchmark.
Impressively, the website found in its testing that the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Note 5 can reach brightness levels of up to 861 nits with Automatic Brightness turned on, which is the brightest that they have ever recorded in a smartphone. The display on the device is also capable of dimming down to only 2 nits without affecting display quality in any way. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, for comparison, is able to achieve brightness levels of just above 550 nits.
Despite coming with such improvements in color accuracy and brightness, the display on the Galaxy Note 5 is up to 21 percent more power efficient than the 5.7-inch Quad HD panel found on the Galaxy Note 4. It is also up to 37 percent more power efficient than the 5.5-inch LTPS LCD display of the iPhone 6 Plus when displaying mixed content like videos and images. The iPhone 6 Plus has a display which is not only 0.2-inch smaller in size but also has a lower resolution than the Note 5.
To Samsung’s credit, Display Mate notes that if the Korean company is able to continue its rapid rate of improvement in Super AMOLED displays, OLED displays may be able to pull ahead of LCD displays in terms of power efficiency in the near future.
The website also tested the dual edge curved display on the Galaxy S6 edge+ and found that it is now capable of offering essentially the same performance as the display on the Galaxy Note 5.
It is likely that Apple will improve the display technology with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus that are reportedly going to be unveiled early next month. Last year, the website had ranked the display on the iPhone 6 Plus as the ‘Best Smartphone LCD’ ever.
