If you have a Chromebook and an Android phone running Lollipop 5.0 or above, you can automatically unlock and log into your laptop when your phone is nearby.

The feature, currently in beta, is called Smart Lock and it connects your Chromebook and Android phone (but not tablet, sorry) via Bluetooth. To set it up, head to your Chromebook’s advanced settings and follow the prompts to pair your phone with the Chromebook.

Set up Smart Lock for Chromebook

  1. If you have more than one compatible phone nearby, turn off the ones you won’t be using.
  2. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  3. Make sure your phone and Chromebook:
    • Are connected to the Internet
    • Have Bluetooth turned on
    • Are signed in to the same Google Account
  4. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  5. Click Settings > Show advanced settings.
  6. In the “Smart Lock for Chromebook” section, click Set up.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your phone and your Chromebook. Be sure to place the phone and the Chromebook close together so that they can detect each other’s Bluetooth signal.

You’ll see a notification on your phone letting you know it’s connected to your Chromebook.

Turn off Smart Lock for Chromebook

  1. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  3. Click Settings > Show advanced settings.
  4. In the “Smart Lock for Chromebook” section, click Turn off.

It took a couple of tries for Smart Lock to find my phone, but now it works like a charm and is quite handy since my Google password is ridiculous to type.
